Mexico City

Mexico City, officially known as México, D. F., or simply D. F.) is the federal district , capital of Mexico and seat of the federal powers of the union. Mexico City is the country's largest city as well as its most important political, cultural, educational and financial center. A modern and vibrant city energized by its people and culture. The city consists of sixteen boroughs with an estimated population of 21.2 million people in the Greater Mexico City. These stats make it the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere. Although very large in population, the city itself seemed much smaller and visitor friendly as we wandered from borough to borough. This is a city I would highly recommend and one that I will definitely return to.

The Zocalo of Mexico City

The main plaza of Mexico City is commonly known as the Zócalo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈsokalo], plinth), meaning plinth. It was the main ceremonial center in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan and from the colonial period on, the main plaza or square in the heart of the historic center of Mexico City. The plaza used to be known simply as the "Main Square" or "Arms Square," and today its formal name is Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square). The modern Zócalo in Mexico City is 57,600 metres² (240 m × 240 m), making it one of the largest city squares in the world.[4] It is bordered by the Cathedral to the north, the National Palace to the east, the Federal District buildings to the south and the Old Portal de Mercaderes to the west, the Nacional Monte de Piedad building at the north-west corner, with the Templo Mayor site to the northeast.
