Founded in 1856, Mount Olivet Cemetery has been acclaimed as one of Nashville's most renowned resting places. The name Mount Olivet was chosen for the cemetery to honor the Mount of Olives where, according to biblical scripture, Jesus Christ ascended into Heaven. Its celebrated history includes impressive family memorials and noted interments of many famous Nashvillians, statesmen and soldiers. Today, the cemetery's peaceful, protected, park-like grounds provide a serene setting for its visitors.
